Eco Art Project · 2012-04-26 16:40 [more]

Eco Art Project
May 22, 2012
Hawthorne communnity

Have you heard? Hawthorne students will be working on an important ECO ART project on May 22.

Every Friday since March, School Improvement Committee volunteers have washed and sorted garbage generated by Hawthorne PIZZA Lunch.

This potential landfill is now art material to be used by each classroom to create an ART piece. Drinking boxes, straws, pizza boxes… everything but the crusts!

This project will raise environmental awareness and encourage stewardship, advocacy and accountability in line with our Big Idea: Climate Change. Plus this is an activity that the whole school will be sharing which is why we need a whole crew of helpful parents.

Please volunteer to help make this day a monumental day at Hawthorne. We are looking for volunteers who can help support the children during the art making process.

We need you to volunteer on May 22 (1 to 3:30 pm) to make this day a success. No art experience necessary! Glue gun experience an asset.
Please contact Shannon (Lucky, Grade 1) shannon_greene@yahoo.com or Jane (Cyrus, Grade 3) ejaneoh@gmail.com.

Earth Week (April 23-27) · 2012-04-19 23:47 [more]

Earth Week
April 23-27, 2012
School Community

Did you receive an email from your class rep with details for Earth Week? The activities start with a community clean up on Friday, April 20, and the fun continues until April 27. Here is a summary in case you missed it!

  • Earth Week Pledge
Each Hawthorne student will be working on a pledge: one thing that they will do to recognize Earth Week. The kids are putting their individual pledges on hand and feet cut-outs that will be displayed around the school. Parents can support them on their pledge and work as a family to plan a home pledge. For some ideas you can check out David Suzuki’s website.
  • Community Clean-Up on Friday, April 20
Each class will have a different time and location. If you don’t know yours, come anyway and pitch in!
  • Walk to School Week, April 23-27
Come to school by foot, by bike, by scooter, or even by TTC! Try not to overuse your car to get around. We will be counting and recording the numbers of students who come to school by human power!! How will you come to school?
  • Book Swap
There will be a book swap in the library from April 23 to 27. During morning recess and during lunchtime, from 11:45 to 12:15 come on by the library to swap books. Students can bring in a book from their own personal collections and swap them at the book swap. Feel free to make book donations to the book swap, and if you don’t have any books to exchange you can purchase books for a small fee from $0.50 to $1.00.
